Facade renovation brightened up Hämeen Kirjapaino’s brand

For Miika Haavisto, Hämeen Kirjapaino in the Tampere district of Vehmainen in Finland is not just a workplace, but almost a second home.

Haavisto is the managing director of this family printing house, which will celebrate its centenary in five years’ time. The company decided to give its building a facelift and so five years ago, the premises dating from 1963 were given a new facade. Cladding made by Ruukki was installed on top of the light Siporex surface.

Elegance and neatness are important both for employee satisfaction and corporate image. "The facelift has boosted the company’s brand and created added value. It now makes much more sense to invite customers here, too," said Miika Haavisto.

In addition to grey cladding, the building also features yellow rainscreen panels between the windows and in the corners of the building.

Harmonious facade

The Hämeen Kirjapaino building has a complex design, with corners and roofs of different heights. The design took on an even more complex shape when the extension was completed in 2015. "When designing the extension, we thought about whether to remain in our existing premises or to move to new ones. We decided to stay. We own the land and building and moving would have meant extra costs and breaks in production. It was possible to give the entire building a harmonious look because the new extension could be given the same type of facade as the renovated part," enthused Miika Haavisto.

Led by examples

Hämeen Kirjapaino’s renovation was given a boost by the modernisation of Glaston’s premises, which are in the neighbourhood. "Not being construction experts ourselves, it was important to see buildings that had already been completed. It was not enough for the salesperson to tell us that steel is ideal material for a facade. References were important in making the decision."

Miika Haavisto added that from the very outset they hoped to use Ruukki products in the renovation. Ruukki’s products arrived on time and work went to plan. Hämeen Kirjapaino’s premises in Tampere underwent a two-stage renewal project. The first stage was five years ago, when the building facade was repaired and three years later when the extension was built. Miika Haavisto summed up the project in one sentence: "We’re pleased with our choice and definitely have no cause to regret it."

Manager close to customers

Hämeen Kirjapaino was established in 1922, employs and average of 65 people and has facilities in Tampere and Vantaa in Finland. In 1995, the Haavisto family took over running the entire company. Miika Haavisto has been managing director since 2010. Responsibilities in this family company have been shared so that Miika’s sister Miia Lehtinen is responsible for the company’s production, administration and finances, and Miika Haavisto for sales, customer relationships and business development.

"A company manager’s key job is to be close to customers. We constantly think of how we can provide services to customers to enable them to focus on their core business. Digitalisation allows quick, easy services for customers in, for example, logistics and marketing services. Service speed and ease of use have a key role."
